astral dust is a 4 song excursion bridging the styles of derek michael and marshall applewhite. this project stems from a live recording of a set performed by michael in 2002. after being tucked away for almost 15 years, the recording was found and sent to applewhite who dissected the performance into fragments and breathed a new life into them. while some portions of this release are distinctly sludgy, the majority is a perfect amalgamation of both michaels and applewhites hard-edge, melodic borderline idm styles. the digital release will feature 2 digital only sub cuts from the sessions.

“the marshall suite” is a 1999 album by the fall (their 20th). the album builds on the techno-influenced beats of its predecessor levitate (1997), while also returning to a more rockabilly-influenced sound reminiscent of earlier fall line-ups.
the end result has songs like the catchy “touch sensitive”, and the strange, complex, thumping jungle beats of “crying marshall”.
the album was long out of print on vinyl, until now.

after a slew of solo releases and a few comps, marshall applewhite has teamed up with fellow detroit native kero to put together a 4 track collaborative effort that explores both the new sludge phenomenon and the more classic detroit techno/electro sound. within 4 songs the two have covered a wide base of musical information. comprised of 2 parts modular gear, 2 parts homemade reaktor patchwork, and 1 part raw machine funk, sewer tracks gives a good representation of each players musical aptitude.

scott marshall is a london-based dj and producer. his debut 4-track ep, titled scott marshall demonstrates a distinctive uk booty sound. early supporters include dj deeon, john heckle, mark forshaw and jamie russell. born and raised in south london through the 80s, scott started buying records when he was 16 amassing a large collection of house, techno, disco and funk.

a bold move to cover a daft punk record? perhaps but off msg and vocalist hadi create a respectful update of the oft overlooked romanthony penned finale to daft punks second album. too long is one side of vinyl and 6 minutes of classic infectious house music as uncomplicated as it is effective. sounding not unlike an early marshall jefferson / jungle wonz record. hadis vocal leads the way, underpinned by loose house beats, live tambourine, a when house was discos little brother bass line and analogue disco stabs that punctuate the space. strictly limited to 500 hand stickered, stamped and numbered with no repress. these will not hang around mastered by original two lone swordsman mr keith tenniswood.

new kanada welcomes londons bob bhamra into the chamber, with this two-track breaker from his west norwood cassette library (wncl) guise. >say what?< is a broken sub workout, with a strong nod to the hardcore continuum. distant alarms, aggressive drums, and deep bass drops make this a floor-killer for all sound camps. >flashlight< is an aqueous solution of damp funk that will resonate the head and drop the lights. gaseous and moody. on the flip is a slow burner remix of >flashlight< by adam marshall - sitting somewhere between tired breaks and acid reggae. 11 minutes of moog.

exposed within the interior of these tracks are a variety of intrusive and extrusive igneous structures. they include the extensive hydrothermal alteration of rhyolites and gabbros and a central megabreccia created by hydrothermal dissolution and collapse. the siliceous megabreccia is at least 40m thick in its center - to only a few meters thick along its edges. the breccia consists of fragments of white to dark gray cherty material, quartz-rich bass, diagenetic clap nodules, and stromatolitic snares. it is intensively silicified.

chaos is a tough, ny-house jam with 909 trim. first 3 minutes for the mix, then ending up just north of hypnotic bell house. strictly for the floor. memphis is a broken shell of a sampled break, worked and loaded under matt maaskants emotive freestyling on a concertmate mg-1. trace is the wandering groove of an excited arpeggiator, after the drum machine has left the building.

new kanada enters the fall 2012 season with some dark angular acidic house. black and medleys >roll the dice< - featuring the voice of rosina – is an old-school blend of disco, ny house and classic toronto warehouse vibes. slightly acidic, with its bubbling juno bassline – and slightly techno with the driving, repetitive beat – this house track should rock the deepest of dancefloors. file somewhere between henry street and early adonis. 5am - no earlier. for the flipside, adam marshall sits down at the controls for a clinical, tight, stripped-down scrubbing, turning the original into a late-night fear edit. broken, diffused drums and lots of black empty space in this one. the lights go out – blackout.

new kanada is honored to have the awesome murr (aka nicholas murray) take the reins on the next release. dusty drums, worn-out pads and a deep respect for the early beatsmiths, nick always creates an atmosphere in his tracks that is definitely not the flavor of the month - but rather the taste of the year. on the a-side, >noise in< is a tough dusty jacker, that builds from a tight dub intoa shimmering melodic bomb. feels like early transmat, late gherkin, or an americanized lfo. shuffle, simmer, and slam. the second cut on the a-side, >broken glass<, is a slamming ode to the sp1200. beats swung hard, percussion rattling the kilter way off, and a suffocating groove. watch out - the shards are sharp. on the b-side, marshall reshapes the original >noise in< into a brutal example of a tough mixing tool. heavy, pulsing basslines and an incessant jack groove. this one should move the floor. red, yellow and orange. rockit!

2010 starts in the right way for sphera with the featured collaboration of this golden couple. famous for his appearence on the top dj charts world wide, marshallteamed up with the turin dj federcio buratti for providing a solid techno track with a moving trumpet. two strong remixers complete this release: francesco grant (material, sci-tec, afu) with his housy mood and marc depulse (blufin, kiddaz, ostwind) with the usual techno bomb!

a killer clubby groove from steve marshall û the kind that reminds us of the best indie singles from the late 70s disco years! steve plays alto sax here over a strutting, high stepping rhythm thats got plenty of warm touches û really glowing with a sense of soul thats great, and touched by some female chorus vocals that are very much in a philly mode! the disco mix is great û even more upbeat and extended than the 45 groove. in the country is a great bit of club jazz û smooth and sweet, but still with a snakey flute line in the middle û almost like some lost bobbi humphrey track from her epic years. do what you will is another chorus vocal number û and you are the world features some laidback mellow flute.

cynosure flag ship artist and label navigator mike shannon reaches into his archives and selects the much-anticipated “the box ep.” “the box is open” was always a highlight of many of mr.shannon’s dj sessions and live acts. this cut delivers nostalgic, old school of detroit, soulful, techno jack. a ton to digest there but there really is no other way to sum it up. adam marshall graces the ep with a stormer of a remix. taking things a step further, adam really explores a different use of the chords given to you in the original. a smooth kicking set of drums and ever elevating sequences of synth keep you on your toes never really knowing exactly when things will drop. definitely a production trait that adam is best known for and it never fails on the floor. howie mangel

ricardo villalobos playlist!! the endless white of the far north. the opening melodies of adam marshalls >north at night< can be heard faintly over the whistling wind. a small black dot appears at the centre of the distant horizon. at first it appears to be still, but gradually we recognize movement. over the next few minutes the shape begins to grow until it has defined the image of a man walking towards us. as he approaches, the music grows clearer. like the warmth of the first sunlight >rose mountain< radiates its glow through the use of a flurry of rhodes electric piano chords. adams signature percussion permeates the dub and binds its elements into an infectious groove. >mfb flex< is the counter balance to the organic flow of the other cuts and molts the warmth into a techno roller designed for the long player mix. marshall said… >ive long been intrigued by that incredible tapestry of tundra and taiga which constitutes the arctic and sub arctic of our country. ive read about it, written about it and even pulled up my parka once and gone there, yet, like all but a very few canadians, ive had no real experience of the north. ive remained, of necessity, an outsider. and the north has remained for me a convenient place to dream about, spin tall tales about, and in the end, avoid<
